Born January 4 in Meiderich (Duisburg)

1895-1901
Trained at the School of Arts and Crafts, Düsseldorf

1901-1906
Enters the Düsseldorf Academy of Art and studies under Karl Janssen

1905
Travels to Italy. Makes numerous drawings, notably of Roman sculpture, Michelangelo’s Medici Chapel and genre scenes of Italian life

1907
Travels to Paris

1908
Marries Anita Kaufman on June 6

1909
On March 11, his first son, Gustav Wilhelm, is born in Düsseldorf

1910
Moves to Montparnasse with his family
Begins work in graphics and is introduced to the process of stone casting

1911
Completes the major sculpture Kneeling Woman, which marks an important stylistic shift in Lehmbruck’s work

1913
Participates in the Armory Show in New York
Manfred, his second son, is born on June 13

1914
With the threat of war, Lehmbruck flees Paris with his family, settling in Berlin in November

1915
Makes repeated attempts to avoid being classified for active military duty
Begins friendship with the Falk family

1915-1916
Serves as a paramedic in a military hospital in Berlin

1917
Moves to Zürich
Guido, his third son, is born on February 2

1919
On January 24, Lehmbruck is selected a member of the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts
Commits suicide on March 25
