DON VAN VLIET
Paintings from the Eighties
12 July through 22 September 2001
UPPER EAST SIDE, NEW YORK
An avant-garde musician and poet known as Captain Beefheart, Don Van Vliet relinquished his musical career in 1982 to concentrate almost exclusively on his drawing and painting. This exhibition offers the rare opportunity to view his paintings from the mid-1980's. Van Vliet injects the legacy of the great American abstract expressionists with a unique vision, fusing figures of nature and the spiritual with vivid abstraction.
