A last portrait for his first return: Catherine Lampert on the show FRANK AUERBACH did not live to see
In the course of 2024 until shortly before his death on November 11, Frank Auerbach, who lived to be 93 years old, painted his three last self-portraits. He did not do so with the realization that he would soon die, but I would nevertheless argue that these final self-images are clearly different from the few self-portraits he created in the decades before.
