The only Berlin exhibition to date of painter Frank Auerbach — still largely unknown in his hometown — took place in 1983, and it happened in Berlin’s teenage bedrooms: back then, many young New Romantics probably wondered what exactly they were looking at when they saw the cover of the double album Oil on Canvas by the English synth-pop band Japan.
