Michael Werner Gallery is pleased to present Buzz Kill, an exhibition of new works by Aaron Curry.
Buzz Kill is Aaron Curry's second exhibition at Michael Werner Gallery, New York, and his most ambitious exhibition to date. The artist will transform the gallery into an environment of total perceptual and physical immersion. A monumental sculpture forms the centerpiece of Buzz Kill: extending from the four corners of the gallery, and reaching from the floor to the ceiling, this massive painted aluminum sculpture divides the exhibition space into individual 'rooms'through which viewers can move. Freestanding sculptures in painted wood and metal, and a group of new three-dimensional, wall-mounted works, occupy the individual spaces. Hand-silkscreened cardboard covers the walls, floor and ceiling of the gallery, mimicking the surfaces of the sculptures and alternately mirroring or camouflaging their forms. Buzz Kill further extends the artist's exploration of the modernist canon into a contemporary visual language of form, color and space, and brings yet another level of complexity to the relationships between drawing and form, abstraction and figuration, and dimensions real and virtual.
Aaron Curry was born in San Antonio, Texas, in 1972. He studied at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, and in 2010 was awarded the Guna S. Mundheim Fellowship in the Visual Arts at the American Academy in Berlin. Recent solo exhibitions include Schinkel Pavillon, Berlin; Bad Dimension, Kestner Gesellschaft, Hannover and Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Bergamo; Two Face (with Thomas Houseago), Ballroom Marfa, Marfa, TX; and Aaron Curry: Hammer Project, UCLA Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. His works were included in the recent group exhibitions Tableaux, Centre National d'Art Contemporain, Grenoble; We Will Live, We Will See, Zabludowicz Collection, London; Secret Societies, Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt and CAPC Bordeaux; American Exuberance, Rubell Family Collection, Miami; Alexander Calder: Form, Balance, Joy, organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; and Statuesque, organized by the Public Art Fund, New York City.
