Michael Werner Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings by the French artist, Eugène Leroy (1910-2000).
Born in Tourcoing in northern France, Leroy is one of the most prominent French artists of the last century. This exhibition is a twenty-five year overview of Leroy's obsession with the classical subject of the nude. The female figure was an inspiration and a focus of his struggle to reconcile the relationship between image, the materiality of painting, and the potential of light. Sometimes emerging bright and luminous from thick layers of paint, sometimes barely discernible amidst the peaks and crevices of color, Leroy's nudes appear to be sculpted from the paint itself, encapsulating the sensuality of the female body. As Leroy stated in an interview in 1992: 'creating a figure in a representational plane, something in two or three dimensions, and imparting life to it'his level of art belongs most properly to painting.'
The works of Leroy are represented in major public and private collections in the United States and Europe, and have been featured in exhibitions at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, the Power Plant, Toronto, Stedlijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Museum van Hedendaagse Kunst, Gent, the Musée d'art moderne de la ville de Paris, Documenta IX, Kassel, and at the Musée d'art moderne et d'art contemporain, Nice.
