Michael Werner Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of objects and works on paper by Marcel Broodthaers (1924-1976).
Belgian artist Marcel Broodthaers has emerged as a highly original and influential artist of the twentieth century, on an international scale. Broodthaers began as a poet and was widely published in Belgium by 1964, the year he began making works as a visual artist. His first artwork consisted of several copies of his final volume of poems, 'Pense-Bête' embedded in a mound of plaster. From that time, Broodthaers produced works in various media that revolved around his interest in word-play and his concept of joining word and image. Because of Broodthaers' exploration of these complex themes he remains a seminal figure for many contemporary artists.
This exhibition will highlight Broodthaers' vision by focusing on interrelated objects and works on paper that juxtapose word and image, poetry and object, language and art. As the artist himself said, 'The language of forms must be united with that of words' Broodthaers' investigation of authorship as artwork, and of the signature as a mark or image with its own artistic integrity, is also explored.
Marcel Broodthaers has been the subject of numerous solo and group museum exhibitions, including retrospectives at the Walker Art Center, the Reina Sofia and the Galerie National du Jeu de Paume. A major selection of important works was included in 'Museum as Muse: Artists Reflect' curated by Kynaston McShine for the Museum of Modern Art, New York. This is the fourth exhibition at Michael Werner of works by Broodthaers. Previous exhibitions included the artist's complete prints, major installations and sculptures, and key works on paper from the sixties and seventies.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10am until 6pm.
