Michael Werner Gallery is pleased to present 'Penck and Baselitz from Beyeler' opening September 14, 2006. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to view masterworks by A.R. Penck and Georg Baselitz from the collection of the Beyeler Foundation.
Located in Riehen, near Basel, the Beyeler Foundation is home to an exceptional collection of over 200 paintings and sculptures by modern and contemporary masters. The collection was developed over a period of more than fifty years by renowned art patron Ernst Beyeler, in tandem with his activities as an art dealer. Under the direction of Mr. Beyeler, Galerie Beyeler presented major showings of A.R. Penck and Georg Baselitz. The collection, which was transferred to the Beyeler Foundation in 1982, represents Mr. Beyeler's personal view of modern art and reflects the in-depth relationships he developed with many of the leading artists of the past century.
Central to the Beyeler Foundation's holdings in Post-War European art are several key works by A.R. Penck and Georg Baselitz, artists with whom the Beyeler Foundation and Michael Werner have had long standing relationships. The exhibition at Michael Werner Gallery features large-scale canvases from the 1970s and 1980s and important early drawings. 'Penck and Baselitz from Beyeler'marks the first time these works have been exhibited in the United States and is a special opportunity to see the artists in context and conversation with one another.
'Penck and Baselitz from Beyeler'is on view from September 14 through October 28 2006. Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 AM until 6 PM.
