Michael Werner Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of works on paper by Peter Doig (b. 1959).
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland and raised in Canada and Trinidad, Peter Doig is internationally recognized as one of the most inventive painters working today. Drawn from personal snapshots, popular films, art history and advertising, Peter Doig's urban-pastoral landscapes, by turns melancholic and hallucinatory, explore the psychological and physical spaces between fiction and truth, depiction and invention, representation and abstraction. His vivid, unexpected palette and varied approach to surface mediates his art's literal sources into artificial scenes evocative of dreams and hazy memories.
Works on paper play an important role in Peter Doig's oeuvre, from the artist's adept maneuvering through drawing, etching, and watercolor, to the various commercial and personal source materials found in his studio. By moving from canvas to paper and back again, Peter Doig is able to extract varying degrees of intensity or subtlety from his vocabulary of images. This exhibition, Peter Doig's first with Michael Werner, offers New York audiences a body of work not seen in the artist's previous U.S. exhibitions.
Peter Doig is one of Britain's preeminent contemporary artists and was nominated for the prestigious Turner Prize in 1994. His solo museum exhibitions include 'Echo Lake'at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, the Berkeley Art Museum, and St. Louis Art Museum; 'Version'at Kunsthaus Glarus; and 'Blizzard seventy-seven'at Kunsthalle Nürnberg and Whitechapel Art Gallery, London. Last year a solo exhibition toured Canada's Belkin Art Gallery, The Power Plant and the National Gallery of Canada.
A full-color catalogue will accompany this exhibition.
