We are pleased to present Karo, an exhibition of paintings by Raphaela Simon. This is Simon’s first solo exhibition in New York.
Boasting a delicate, geometric precision, Simon’s paintings possess a deliberate simplicity. Their architectural and minimalist iconography evokes motifs of memory and nostalgia, of half-formed patterns lost in recollection. Simon further investigates these ideas in the materiality of her paintings: she works in layers, utilizing the fluid uncertainty of oil paint as she adds and effaces coat after coat. The resultant works are both structural and impermanent, as mathematical as they are abstract.
Raphaela Simon was born in 1986 in Villingen, Germany and lives and works in Düsseldorf. She studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich. Recent exhibitions include Staubsauger, Galerie Max Hetzler, Berlin (2017); Tischlein deck dich, Hannah Hoffman Gallery, Los Angeles (2016); and lady work work, TRAMPS, London (2014).
Karo opens on 5 November with a reception for the artist from 6 – 8PM. TRAMPS and Michael Werner Gallery, Vitrine are located on the second floor of the New York Mart Mall at 75 East Broadway, beneath the Manhattan Bridge.
