Disillusioned by the outcome of European political events of the late nineteen sixties, and dissatisfied with his role as an artist, in 1970 Immendorff joined the League Against Imperialism. Having pledged to produce art in the service of the German Maoist party, Immendorff proceeded to create a unique body of work in stark contrast to the his playfully anarchic paintings and happenings of the previous decade. For Immendorff, the early seventies were a period of intense exploration into the possibilities of melding of art and politics.
